LOVE CAN DO THAT
The recording of my ‘Love Can Do That’ album was in Los Angeles – it gave me the opportunity to work with a lot of new, exciting talented people. Dennis Lambert was introduced to me – he’s had a wonderful career as a songwriter and producer having worked with artists such as: The Four Tops, Commodores, Glen Campbell, Santana, Righteous Bros. and Natalie Cole.
Dennis set about the task of finding new songs. In all over 600 songs were listened to, my team and I indulging in long playback sessions – growing fat on American takeaways – and deafer by the minute! Fortunately some great writers whom I’ve respected over the years also contributed some wonderful work to this project.
Diane Warren, one of America’s most successful writers presented me with the title track for the album “Love Can Do That” and Diane and Robbie Buchanan also gave me a song which became a firm favourite to everyone who heard it, “Heart Don’t Change Your Mind”.
Ironically we had to travel 6000 miles to find two superb English songs. Tucked away in Los Angeles we discovered “Oxygen” by Nik Kershaw and “Well Almost” by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight, and I took with me “Only The Very Best” from the musical ‘Starmania’ composed by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon with original English lyric by Tim Rice.
My all time favourite contemporary writer, Jimmy Webb, gave me “Grow Young” – a song that will stay with me! One of our great song discoveries was “Same Train” written by new writers Dyna Brein, Cal Curtis and Chris Farren, gave me the opportunity to sing with the fabulous Christopher Cross.
Jim Weatherly, the writer of “Midnight Train To Georgia” this time in partnership with Toni Jolene gave the album a simple beautiful statement of love. The song “If I Love You” says so much with so few words.
