In 2006, I found myself back in the studio recording this album in the wonderful countryside of Buckinghamshire with my old team at Mike Moran Music; it reminded me of the halcyon days when groups decamped to seek rural inspiration.
I hope we were inspired as we set out to find a different take on some of my favourites from the nation’s top 20, my Radio 2 listeners having voted for their Essential Musicals. It was also an opportunity to be able to revisit ‘Evita’ and ‘Chess’ which were among the top 10 and to be able to record new material which has been added in subsequent productions of these shows: the beautiful “You Must Love Me” and “Someone Else’s Story”. And who would have guessed that the closing track “Broadway Baby” from Follies would feature in my Broadway return years later!
