CHESS (Original Concept Album)
A LOVE TRIANGLE during the world chess championship in Merano, Northern Italy. I played Florence Vassey, assistant (‘the second’) to a temperamental American chess champion, played by Murray Head, who is defending his title against a young Russian challenger, played by Tommy Körberg.
‘Chess’ was written for me, and was a project in which I was involved from its inception. Like ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Evita’, it began as a concept album. I would accompany lyricist Tim Rice on weekend visits to Stockholm to work in Abba’s famous Polar Recording Studios. With Benny, Björn, Tim and Tommy, we tried out different tunes, keys and lyrics; swapped around duets and solos. It was a workshop, a new experience for me to be part of the creative process.
The album was released in 1984 and got into the UK top forty chart, and the single of “I Know Him So Well”, a duet with Barbara Dickson and me, climbed to Number 1 in the British charts for four weeks and remained in the charts for a further 16 weeks.
Note: The original concept album ‘Chess’ attained a 2x Platinum certification by the BPI (The British Recorded Music Industry) for sales in the UK – this award marks sales of 600,000 units of an individual album title to UK retailers. The single release of “I Know Him So Well” also attained Platinum certification.
