Having enjoyed many very recently and having been reminded of another today by a coworker who asked me if I'd ever seen Chicago (sadly, he meant the movie,) I was hoping some other members might also like to share a life-changing theatre memory or two. Smiley

I saw the current LONG running revival of Chicago on Broadway while Joel Grey and Bebe Neuwirth were still in it (Anne Reinking had been replaced by Marilu Henner.)

When Bebe performed "I Can't Do it Alone" the audience went wild!  And rightly so.  She was amazing.  What was funny was that she was supposed to hold her position at the end of the number until the applause ended.  But the audience would not stop applauding!  Eventually she held her body position but turned her head to the audience with an expression as if to say, "May I continue now?"  Grin

Incredible performer.  Still kills me every time I need to give someone "'Lillith' from Frasier" as a frame of reference.

Anyone else have a memory to share?

I remember seeing Yul Brynner in the King and I late in his career. He was absolutely wonderful as the King! When he came out at the end for his curtain call...he threw his arms into the air just the the King would have. Such a ham..but I loved him for it. He was just great! I'll never forget that!

My incredible theatre memory was my first West End Show, to be honest I cant even remember who was in it but it was Annie at the Victoria Palace Theatre. It set up my love and passion for musical theatre. It was a school trip and I was about 9 years old. I will never forget it and how I wished that I was up on that stage with the girls.......

I like this thread...so hard to pick though.
One of my favorite moments was The Lion King.  It was Calvin's fourth birthday (grandson).  We took him to the musical.  As the costumed animals made their way through Fairpark Music Hall in Dallas, he threw up his little arms;  he was teary eyed and overwhelmed; he just shook his head in amazement.
So glad to share the love of music and theater with him...

I have to say one of my most memorable happened recently and was shared with BB.  On June 15th as we were listening to one of the songs being performed in Follies as the song got further and further along we/I was holding my breath...I thought I might leap from my seat at the very end of the number from pure joy.  We decided at the intermission to celebrate with our favourite champagne cocktail called Diva! One of the first shows I saw when I was younger was 'Joseph' -seen it many times since, as I know Erica has. This was a touring Kenwright producton and I remember the cast came down off stage at some point for some reason.

We were sat on the front row, -my Auntie and I, and we had a bag of sweets of some sort. One of the 'brothers' ran up to us, stole the bag and took them on stage -sharing them out with the rest of the brothers and the narrator.  Grin  If I remember rightly, we got free ice cream in the interval  Wink

Many more memories to share, but I'll take it in turns with others!  Kiss

Ok here's my second incredible theatre memory.

In 1998, Ben and I went to the Tony Awards.  That's right.  Live and in person.  Somewhere I still have the beautiful thick Playbill to prove it.  Smiley  It was the second year the general public could buy tickets.

Here is the Wiki link Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login

Anyway it was the year for Lion King and Art (both of which I've seen and LOVED.)  And soooo many of my favorite performers were there: Patti LuPone, Rebecca Luker, Alan Cumming .  . .  just an incredible array of talent.

I remember walking in my gown (black tie only even for the general public) around Radio City where we certainly did not walk anywhere near a red carpet of any sort but we did walk behind ropes and the other fans watched us go by with envious looks.

I also remember Rosie O'Donnell coaching us on how and when to applaud and what was going to happen and how funny she was during the commercial breaks to keep the energy up.  She reminded us that we were NOT at the Oscars and CBS would only carry the show for 2 hours and that was it!  She was right.  It's not so bad now but back then the person accepting the Tony for Best Musical could be cut off right in the middle of his/her speech!  They did not play around!

Anyway, later that summer we moved to Austin, TX for 2 years so this was a wonderful way to say farewell to NYC for the time being.  I missed it so while I was in Austin.  I miss it now.  Cry
