I read somewhere that a filmed stage version was what ALW had in mind. Fingers crossed! Smiley

As I have said on here before Hollywood is all about the money. Now we all know EP has the best voice but Glenn Close is the movie star with the star power.

If a movie is done it will most likely be Close.

I wish someone would do a DVD like they did of Cats with EP as Norma. That would make a great show. But for me Piaf with EP is the one I really, really want.

She was the best I've ever seen her live in Piaf........just amazing and such a different role for her (though I saw her in Sunset 4 times and thought she was amazing ) I'd love to see her do it again, though I doubt we ever will  Sad

Obviously we are all a bit biased where EP is concerned but out of the Normas I have seen, Patti Lupone, Betty Buckley, Petula Clark and Glenn Close on the ALW 50th birthday DVD, EP by far had the best voice and her performance of As If We Never Said Goodbye is one of my favourite songs that she performs.  I saw EP in Sunset in December 1994 when she stood in for Betty Buckley. I think I saw EP on about the second or third night after she opened and although she was word perfect there were a few hitches like when she knocked over the candles during Surrender and caught her dress on the set during With One Look and John Barrowman's laughing fit at the start of act 2 but like a true pro she was un phased and just carried on.

Back to the original point though I doubt EP would be in any filmed version and ALW would go for Glenn Close who I think has a rather limited range and a bit of a tuneless and shrill voice but for an international market he would go for a big film name.

You are probably right, Stewart. Maybe it wouldn't be completely up to ALW anyway. I think that's what happened with Evita. Oh well, we can dream can't we? Cry
I do know I wouldn't go see it anyway if EP wasn't in it. I really have never seen Evita with Madonna because I have never been a fan of hers and now that I am a EP fan, I will never see it!

I'd advise you see Judy, because even though I dislike Madonna, I think the Evita film is actually pretty great. If they made it in the 1980s, then Elaine would've been fine for the role, but in the mid-1990s then a film with her playing Peron would've just been ridiculous.

As Stuart says we're all a little biased, but just because Elaine 'did' the show in 1978, doesn't mean that nobody else can touch it at all, ever. I didn't see it -as I haven't seen Elaine in ANY musical show (other than in bootlegs etc), so I'm not going to throw statements around like 'Nobody else could ever do it' and I'm going to completely rule out watching anyone else do it because I've heard Elaine sing a song or two from the show!

I quite enjoyed the film of Evita but Madonna did not have the vocal range to play that role (ALW said that himself). We were lucky to get a film of Evita as we don't get that many musical films but understandably it is all about making money and a big name sells.  A friend of mine had never seen a musical film in her life but she was a huge Madonna fan so she went to see Evita and it did give her a bit of a taster for musicals after that when she realised it wasn't such a difficult art from to get your head around.

I think Meryl Streep would be an excellent Norma as she is a great actress and proved she can sing in Mamma Mia and she would be box office gold!

Stewart, apologies for calling you 'Stuart' in my earlier message! I agree that Madonna wasn't the best possible choice, but the film itself (visually etc etc) was great, and I loved Antonio and Pryce. (Pryce was an odd choice too though I thought, as he looked nowt like Juan!)

I'm with you all the way on Meryl. She would be an excellent choice.

I also liked the Evita movie, as a movie.

Agree about Meryl, she is a terrific actress and would do Norma justice on film. Did you know she trained to be an opera singer?

But no one can play her like EP can!  Wink

I'm not saying no one else could do could do it, I just meant I would rather have EP do Norma. As for Evita movie, of course EP wasn't going to do it then. They took too long to make the movie!  Undecided

I've never seen Elaine in a theatrical role, just once in concert, so I can't comment on that part, but in my opinion the other ladies can't compare vocally to EP. Close and Streep are great actresses but their vocals leave much to be desired. I liked Mama Mia, but I thought Streep was a bit too flamboyant. And sorry to say this, but in the Norma turban, Glenn Close looked too much like a drag queen. I've seen bits and pieces of the film Evita and Madonna didn't stink. I like Betty Buckley and think she did a respectable job on Memory. Can't stand Patti Lupone's diva attitude but she is talented. I think it comes down to the fact that we all love EP and her talent and are a bit protective and defensive for her when someone else remakes what she did so brilliantly the first time.
We are biased, but can you blame us?  Wink

I liked Betty Buckley in Cats..she is actually the one I saw sing Memory before EP. (when I saw EP she blew me away!!) Not a fan of Patti..her diction is weird.

I've disliked Patti and Glenn since before I'd heard of EP. I do like Betty Buckley, but EP is my favorite. Smiley

What a great EPOS! Really enjoyed it, some great music and love the way a few songs we'll hear sung by EP in Harrogate were slipped in  Smiley
