The Daily Mail's showbiz
page reported today on
Elaine defying the lights
going out on Broadway this
week during her performance
of I’m Still Here in
Sondheim’s Follies:
IF
ANYONE needed a lesson in
how a great theatre star
handles a mishap on stage,
they should have been at the
Marquis Theatre in New York
last Friday night, when the
lights went out as Elaine
Paige was in the middle of
her big solo number, I'm
Still Here, from the musical
Follies.
'Good times and bum times,
I've seen them all / And my
dears, I'm still here,' she
sang (rather appropriately)
- and she kept on singing in
defiance of the dark, with
enough vital energy to power
her own spotlights.
In fact, the power cut,
which hit the rest of Times
Square, only added to
Paige's powerful delivery of
the number.
Before she'd even opened her
mouth I'd already decided
she was giving the best
performance in the show -
although Jan Maxwell had a
good moment or two...
